South Georgia College was founded in 1906. South Georgia College is the oldest two year public school in Georgia. The college is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The campus is of 240 landscaped acres located in Douglas. The college has student strength of 1,500. The college has a teacher / student ratio of 1:20. About half of all faculty members have terminal degrees like Ph. D. The campus is close to shops, restaurants, and supermarkets. South Georgia College has a wonderful library called S. Smith Library. The library has more than 100,000 study materials which include reference books, bound periodicals, government documents, pamphlets, videotapes and maps. The library has subscription of 327 journals and ten newspapers. The computers offer access to the Internet and word processing software is also available. The students are also offered financial aid and scholarships. The college awards over $3 million in financial aids to the students. Seven out of ten students in the college receive financial aid in form of scholarships, grants, loans, work study. The college offers merit based scholarships on the basis of SAT/ACT scores and top grades in high school. The college also offers sports facilities like baseball, soccer, softball, flag football, basketball, volleyball, handball, golf, tennis, billiards, weightlifting, table tennis etc.

The students opting for admission in South Georgia College will have to submit an application, high school transcripts or GED scores. The students will also have to submit an immunization form. The student may also require taking COMPASS exam depending on SAT/ACT scores and high school transcripts. COMPASS exam is taken to determine the need for learning support.
